Day 1 - Introduction to Freedom of Speech

Day 1: Introduction to Freedom of Speech

Students will identify exceptions to free speech protections, expand their legal vocabulary, and apply critical thinking to evaluate when speech can be restricted, using scenario analysis and a debate on regulating hate speech.

Day 2: Limits to Free Speech

Students will explore how free speech applies in educational settings, build on legal vocabulary, and enhance critical thinking by analyzing school-specific case scenarios and debating school authority over off-campus social media posts.

Day 3: Free Speech in Schools

Students will investigate free speech challenges in online and social media contexts, incorporate advanced legal vocabulary, and critically assess digital speech scenarios through analysis and a debate on social media content moderation.

Day 4: Free Speech in the Digital Age

Daily Objective: Students will synthesize course knowledge on free speech, review all legal vocabulary, and demonstrate critical thinking through comprehensive scenario analysis and a culminating debate.

Day 5: Review and Real-World Application

Overall Course ObjectiveBy the end of this 5-day course on Freedom of Speech Law, middle school students will develop a foundational understanding of the First Amendment's protection of free speech in the United States.
