<h3 id="ce5a2f8e-2d7b-4c10-b028-ed264e483b6e" data-toc-id="ce5a2f8e-2d7b-4c10-b028-ed264e483b6e" style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Detailed Objective</h3>Students will be able to:<ol><li>Define minimum wage and explain its primary goal (to ensure a basic standard of living for low-wage workers).</li><li>Summarize the current federal minimum wage in the United States and note that states and localities may set higher rates.</li><li>Compare two key perspectives: (a) how minimum wage helps reduce poverty and increase worker spending power, and (b) how some employers argue it raises labor costs and may lead to fewer jobs or higher prices.</li><li>Analyze a simple real-world example (e.g., a fast-food worker’s hourly pay before and after a state minimum-wage increase) to identify one benefit and one potential drawback for each stakeholder (worker, employer, consumer).</li><li>Discuss and analyze arguments for and against increasing a state or community’s minimum wage.</li><li>Identify areas of agreement and disagreement with other deliberation participants.</li><li>Reach a decision, individually and collectively, on the deliberation issue using evidence and sound reasoning.</li></ol>

Middle School 

Students will understand the purpose and effects of minimum wage laws and deliberate, using evidence and reasoning, on whether a state or community should increase its minimum wage.
